Membership in SPBGMA is for a calendar-year and is done by registration and the paying of nominal membership dues.

The corporate charter states

that the goals of SPBGMA are:

 

To preserve the traditional spirit and art form of Bluegrass music,

 

To offer a management service for any community desiring to hold a Bluegrass festival,

 

To organize and conduct Bluegrass Band competitions,

 

In all SPBGMA sponsored events, instruments must be traditional acoustic instruments, no electrified instruments permitted,

 

To encourage professionalism in appearance and showmanship by the performers at SPBGMA events,

 

To encourage the support of various Bluegrass publications and associations.
